The Coalition of the Willing

As you may or may not already be aware, members of the Watcher's Council hold a vote every week on what we consider to be the most link-worthy pieces of writing around...  though I don't actually vote unless there happens to be a tie, I do get to choose two of the non-council nominations for each vote held.  When I choose two blogs to nominate for next week's vote, I will limit myself to considering those who do the following:

  1. You must make a post containing 4 required links -- your qualification post must link to the most recent winning council post, the most recent winning non-council post, the results of the latest vote, and that vote's posting of the nominees.

  2. Then send me an email with "LINK WHORAGE" as the subject and include a link to the post you want me to consider nominating...  also, please include a link to your post required by the previous step.

  3. Please follow the previous two steps before Tuesday's nomination deadline of 8 PM, Eastern Standard Time.

I will look at all the submissions and then nominate the two posts that I like the most.  When I post the full list of nominations, I'll also list below them up to ten more submitted posts that I feel are the most deserving of an honorable mention...  this list of ten extra posts can't be voted on by council members, but it should help you to garner some attention.

I made the same offer last week, but not many bloggers took me up on it.  Keep in mind...  if you are only one of a dozen (or fewer) people who follow the instructions above, then you are pretty much guaranteed an honorable mention at the very least.  As usual, I will be reposting this announcement on a weekly basis.

Update: To make things easier on yourself, just go ahead and copy the HTML code from this box when making your qualification post.

I thought it would be best to leave out the entries that didn't receive any votes at all.  The fractions come from the splitting of the votes...  primary choices counted as 2/3 of a vote and secondary choices counted as 1/3.  Both counts for primary and secondary choices were then added all together.  I could have avoided using fractions, but it would have put the results on a completely different scale...  I'd rather that the total reflect how many people actually voted.  Please send any questions, comments, complaints, criticisms, crude insults, or thinly-veiled threats to this address.

The 2007 WOW Awards

With a new year upon us, it's time to look back at the Watcher's Council weekly voting results for all of 2007.  And, just as I did the last time around, I've decided to keep a running tally of votes for each blog that won (or tied for first place) on any given week...  I could have kept track of all the vote-getters instead of just adding up the winners, but such a list would have been enormous and taken forever to compile.  Anyway, the leading winner in the council category was Big Lizards, and the leading non-council winner was Michael Yon.  Huzzah and kudos!  Here is the list of all the weekly winners for 2007:

Andrew Olmsted, Rest In Peace

I never really got to know Andrew Olmsted all that well, only from reading his blog and interacting with him during his short time as a Watcher's Council member...  but he always struck me as just an all-around great guy, even when I disagreed with him.  The last thing I can remember saying to him was thanking him for his service and wishing him a safe return from Iraq...  sadly, that wish didn't come true.  While reading Andrew's final blog entry, written to be posted in the event of his death, I was trying to comprehend what it would be like to sit down and write something like that...  all I could think was that mine would probably be a much shorter post than his.  Anyway, here is one of the final requests made in that post:

“What I don't want this to be is a chance for me, or anyone else, to be maudlin.  I'm dead.  That sucks, at least for me and my family and friends.  But all the tears in the world aren't going to bring me back, so I would prefer that people remember the good things about me rather than mourning my loss.  (If it turns out a specific number of tears will, in fact, bring me back to life, then by all means, break out the onions.) I had a pretty good life, as I noted above.  Sure, all things being equal I would have preferred to have more time, but I have no business complaining with all the good fortune I've enjoyed in my life.  So if you're up for that, put on a little 80s music (preferably vintage 1980-1984), grab a Coke and have a drink with me.  If you have it, throw ‘Freedom Isn't Free’ from the Team America soundtrack in; if you can't laugh at that song, I think you need to lighten up a little.  I'm dead, but if you're reading this, you're not, so take a moment to enjoy that happy fact.”

See what I mean?  What a guy.  Ok, Andy...  this one's for you:

Council members should email me their votes by Thursday at 8 PM Eastern Standard Time.  By the way...  anyone that wants to review the updated version of the council rules can do so by clicking on the image at the top of my right sidebar, which is attached to every page on this site.  To peruse my archives, click the image at the top of the other sidebar.

Only two bloggers took me up on my most recent offer of link whorage...  so there won't be any spillover into honorable mentions this week.
